YOUR NEIGHBOR JILLIAN
Jillian Burgos is a neighborhood councilmember, small business owner, essential worker, life-long renter, and candidate to become the next City Councilmember for District 2. Jillian would also be the first Afro-Latina in history to serve on the Los Angeles City Council.
Raised by a single mother and her grandmother in Cleveland, OH Jillian grew up in poverty and witnessed first-hand, the impacts of neglect from local government. She had to take on responsibilities beyond her years, learning how to give insulin shots and read blood glucose for her grandmother while juggling school and part-time work. Despite the lack of a stable home environment and financial struggles, Jillian never let these obstacles hold her back. She worked hard in school and managed to secure a full scholarship to Ohio State University, where she pursued a passion for theater.
Jillian’s theater career took her to Los Angeles, where she soon founded her own theater company in District 2 with a focus on uplifting the experiences and stories of marginalized communities, creating smarter and more inclusive shows and scripts, and fighting for livable wages for thespians and writers.
Jillian's love for the San Fernando Valley and her commitment to her community soon led her into public service. In 2021, Jillian was elected to NoHo Neighborhood Council. She went on to develop a Tenant Rights Workshop in partnership with The City of Los Angeles, Abundant Housing LA, and SAJE, and helped pass several Neighborhood Purpose Grants that feed many of NoHo’s unhoused and have brought mental health services and mentorship to schoolchildren in the district. She has also worked to bring care to public safety by advocating for unarmed crisis response with LA Forward.
Jillian's campaign is not just about winning an election – it's about building a bridge from the Valley to City Hall and prioritizing the needs of Council District 2. By focusing on preventative services and community solidarity, she aims to create a more equitable and inclusive future for all residents, with a focus on affordable housing, ending homelessness, expanding transportation access, environmental sustainability, and economic justice for all.
